For some reason this reminds me of The Scar, by China Mieville. Maybe it's cuz they flew around in dirigibles at various points throughout the story, and his sci-fi world is full of all sorts of odd things, telepathy included.
Perhaps not a good association, but I thought of "Around the World in 80 Days" and imagined this could make a great introduction to a sci fi sequel! Certainly inspires some interesting thoughts!
