THE ROCKY ROAD
Doing porridge and serving up the slops
On death row with the other part time cooks
I know Shirley's thinking about me now
The way that I was thinking of my Mum
When she went into hospital that day
You feel it in your gut and in your heart
So many signs along the rocky road
When Shirley visited me in the clink
Fifty something years ago tomorrow
but who else is recalling this mad thing
They say that an eyewitness never lies
But why tell the truth if not under oath
Everybody's guilty as hell sometimes
Some more than others and prison won't wait
On death row with the other part time cooks
Doing porridge and serving up the slops
