Another Little Song...

Here's a Little Song I wrote four years ago but didn't publish here:

OUR LOVE

(AIN'T MADE IN HEAVEN)

If only we could try to fly

You tell me lies to make me cry

I know you look the other way

Can't bear to be too close to me

No matter what I do or say

There's no future that I can see

They say that love won't be for us

If our love ain't made in heaven

Despite how much I faff and fuss

If our love ain't made in heaven

What happened to the mega crush

Don't think of searching back again

All hell fell out of such and such

Why did you try to change me then

You tell me lies to make me cry

If only we could try to fly

DAY TWENTY

THE PHOTOGRAPH

They stood still in time in nineteen nineteen

and they're still standing there

At Chorlton tram terminus in the picture

that came from the pub

The photograph now on my wall in monochrome

black and white

But that's all right they won't change

they'll always be there

Long after I've gone they'll still be

standing on that photo

In that same frame large as life looking into the

twenty first century through the glass

NaPoWriMo 2026

Please note that all my NapoWriMo entries this year will appear on my Straight Talking Street Talking Sweet bloggage at: sewina.blogspot.com

DAY TWELVE

TOP EURO

(FOR A PINT OF

THE BLACK STUFF)

Crazy as flying to a European capital for the day

and perhaps as mad as paying top Dollar

or in this case top Euro for a pint of the black stuff

silly as walking everywhere when there were buses

trains and trams to hop on and off of

(don't think I've ever said 'off of' before)

daft as standing on every other bridge over the Liffey

and only seeing one small boat float under

and it definitely wasn't the Guinness barge

another large Jamieson at a different pub in Temple Bar

a pint of Stout and a short crawl or should I say wobble

up the cobbles to the next hostelry for more of the same

insane stuff where we met Oscar Wilde sitting outside

brazen as brass or perhaps as bold as bronze

much like the regulars inside the rub-a-dub-dub

who all claimed to be related to him phew

Unlucky for some...

 FRIDAY THE THIRTEENTH

Friday the thirteenth who would have thought it

not me of course but her and a million other

superstitious mothers will lose it all if they fall

and many more than you think most probably will

Bazillions of them crawling out of the proverbial woodwork

dicey as lice before their ship sinks without trace

like the Bismark and the Titanic before her

going down on the ocean bed to a watery grave

With their families still waiting for them back home

only who else could it happen to these days

when nobody loses and everyone's an after dinner winner

the last investigation that they want in all the world begins today

Therefore at the final hurdle everything will unfold

the things we have been told and not been told

the story of those poor men and women will be sold

that lost their lives on land or shipwrecked at sea

Happy New Year 2026

BATMAN AND CARRUTHERS

Upstairs downstairs or in yer ladies chamber

who can tell what spell will or won't unfold

New Year-ness less we forsake it mistake it

for something or other unpleasant or not

Will we even make it some of us won't

that's for sure the way the clock trickles

like the toxic tears of a clown tic tock down

for another season another reason

for all and sundry to live life to the full

Foolish as it may or may not seem

it's a dream for some and a necessity for others

What's your New Years resolution gonna be

the same as last year but you'll keep it this time

or will you start on February the second like me

So long as it's a Tuesday and the weekend is over

and well and truly behind you Carruthers

Remember what you said about Christmas

when I asked you what day it was on

You said I'm not all that bothered Batman

as long as it's not Friday the thirteenth

Who can tell what spell will or won't unfold

Upstairs downstairs or in yer ladies chamber

I looked at the map but I couldn't find you
All of those stations and nowhere to go
Then if I do catch a train or a tram
The real life Adams family will turn up

Nightmare on a Saturday afternoon
Everybody else is going somewhere
Hello am I even allowed to go
No I'm stuck here waiting for my tablets

Metro Manila One..

 CAVEMAN (AT THE ZOO)

I went to see the Caveman at the zoo

I read about him in the papers

it was all over the news

Neanderthals and Troglodytes were only fantasy

I went to see the Caveman at the zoo

but they told me that the only Caveman

that they've got looks just like me

I looked for ages in the cages

but the only thing I saw was a dinosaur

and that dinosaur looked just like you

and you're my clone

If the truth was known I was on my own

I was the only Caveman at the zoo

and all those creatures proud and poor were

locked up in that godforsaken place like me

I went to see the Caveman at the zoo

but they told me that the only Caveman

that they've got looks just like me

Neanderthals and Troglodytes were only fantasy

they had all escaped to a better place you see

 MAY ONE

NaPoWriMo 2025

CONCLUSION

You can read all of my entries from this years April Challenge and sixteen previous years of NaPoWriMo on my StraightTalkingStreetTalkingSweet bloggage at WWW.SEWINA.BLOGSPOT.COM

Okay, congratulations to all who have completed or even attempted this years April Challenge.

I've been doing this for a few years now and as ever I'm not very happy with the result of my effort. However, I have managed to write one or two pieces towards collections of poetry that I started many moons ago. Perhaps, I will never be able to finish them, but any progress is valuable. What you must realise is that whatever you write, on a poem-a-day basis is only ever going to qualify as a rough first draft, unless you are very lucky or extremely skilful. On that basis I am fairly happy with the work I have produced and I know that I can improve upon each poetic slice in the future.

Finally I will now publish my conclusion poem below.

SOONER OR LATER

Pedestrian as a Zebra crossing

Jaywalking on a Scalextric chicane

Drinking for England but not to get high

Don't wait for the last bus get this one home

Football was never like this in the park

Drunk and disorderly for beginners

Cricket wickets down for goalposts again

Up in court not for the first time surely

Who told you that everything is okay

Sooner or later you will know the truth

Upsetting as it may be to tell you

Nothing is going to change very soon

APRIL FOURTEEN

FINDING GOLD

Dreaming like they were when they sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean like Thor Heyerdahl did on his way to Tenerife and perhaps Jason and the Argonauts hugging the North African coast heading down to Agadir others went before them the stuff that myths are made of Thor thought the ancient pyramid builders passed that way from Egypt en-route to South America stopping at Tenerife and throwing up a pyramid or two but when they were finally excavated it turned out they had been built on a rubbish tip for agricultural use no earlier than the nineteenth century but lets not upset the Freemasons and others who believed and still do that these drywall lava stone structures were strategically positioned to view the summer solstice like finding gold at the end of the rainbow perhaps Jason's Golden Fleece or the Templars Holy Grail

The Acrobat Crew

APRIL FOOL'S DAY 1992

Friday morning, in broad daylight, on the third of April, a minibus pulls up in leafy Lincolnshire outside the house of an art collector. Eight men jump out of the vehicle. They're head to foot in black. One of them is carrying a package under his right arm. As they approach the front door of the eighteenth century mansion, the van they arrive in drives away and parks out of sight, at the side of the house.

There's this one picture on a wall of our local pub that stands out like a sore thumb. Most people assume it's a print and hardly give it a second glance. It certainly looks like it could be a scene from the Manchester Ship Canal, and the foreground of the piece has Lowry's trademark matchstick men and women, but the truth of the matter is that no one really knows if it is actually a Lowry print or something by another artist after the manner of his iconic style.

When Saturday came, and Boston United played Altrincham FC in the GM Vauxhall Conference League, exactly nine hundred people attended the game, including nine Manchester lads from the Acrobat crew, who had jibbed in, good style, both under and over the turnstiles. I for one, thought they would have been better off walking a few hundred yards up Claremont Road to see Man City beat Leeds United four nil at Maine Road like most of the blokes in this pub did.

But there you go, they had their own agenda and they were sticking to it. The Acrobats, who for reasons best known to themselves, always dressed in black, reputedly went on a two day bender around Lincolnshire. However, I suspect that part of the jolly was to do a little reconnaissance work for the mission that suited the true purpose of their extra long weekend away.

Of course some of us knew what the picture really was, and almost exactly how long it had been hanging on the pub wall. I (along with others) remember the day that it went missing. It was the first of April nineteen ninety two. Shakespeare's Sister were at number one in the UK charts, and the
hostelry was extremely busy. Then, when the picture amazingly reappeared, the following Sunday, one of the regulars suggested that it had been stolen for a joke, a prank, perhaps, by someone from another pub.

There it was, hanging in its usual place on the wall at one end of the bar. There was no visible damage to the artwork or the glass, or the frame. In fact, if anything, the colours looked brighter and the images appeared to be clearer now than ever before. Then there were those of us who knew different, not to mention a certain gang of lads who travel up and down the country to supposedly watch a game of football anywhere they can and to cause a bit of mayhem and to drink a shed full of beer in the process.

They say that they actually support City, because they started off as 'Mind yer car mister?' kids whenever the blues were playing at home. However, these days they only go to watch the Cityzens when they play away from Maine Road. Therefore, when City play at home and a different local side is playing away against another club, even at the other end of the country, if it suits their purposes, that is where you'll find them.

So on April Fools Day that year, the afore mentioned 'City fans' just happened to stroll into my local pub, as they sometimes did, for an afternoon snifter. That was of course, the very same day that the framed picture disappeared. Rumour had it that this gang were planning a long weekend trip to watch Altrincham FC play away from home against Boston United. Most of the local gangs, in those days, continued the Victorian tradition of naming themselves after the streets where they lived, like the Scuttler gang the 'Bengal Tigers' from Bengal Street in Ancoats, and the 'Beach Boys' better known as 'The Beech' who hailed from Beech Road. Those of us who knew the Acrobat crew, also knew that they were from the flats near the old shopping precinct.

No one could possibly foretell, that a bunch of drunken Mancunians would be arriving in the city of Lincoln in the early hours of Thursday morning, for a mammoth pub crawl on their way, supposedly, to Boston for a football match on the Saturday. Also, that somewhere, carefully wrapped up, and concealed inside a black hooded sweat shirt, they had brought with them an inexpensive, but adequately framed Lowry pub print.

Once inside the house, the Acrobats set to work, being careful not to touch or disturb any of the numerous works of art in the priceless collection. They searched for and soon found the piece they were looking for, it was known as 'Northern River Scene' but was actually a Lowry painting of the Fosdyke Canal in Lincoln which had been bought the previous year, at auction, for a significant wad of cash.

One of the Acrobats lifted it from the wall and laid it face down on the art dealer's billiard table. Then, taking a Swiss Army knife, he expertly opened up the frame and liberated the original artwork, quickly doing the same thing to the print they had brought with them and swapping the two, fastening up the cheap pub print inside the expensive frame with all the letters of provenance and art dealers' marks stamped on the back. He offered it up, and repositioned it, carefully, in the very same place on the art connoisseur's wall.

Exactly seven and a half minutes after their arrival, the Acrobats were seen driving away in a minibus with cloned number plates. And oh yes, the original Lowry painting, which has been innocently hanging in our local boozer ever since, is now worth several hundred thousand pounds. As for the inexpensive print that previously hung on the pub wall, well, it sold to a private collector nine years and two months later, for £443,750, on the eighth of June two thousand and one, at Christie's auction house.

And just for the record, in April nineteen ninety two, Boston beat Altrincham, by two goals to one, on Saturday the fourth. The official attendance was eight hundred and ninety one, but if you know, you know. That's that, end of story, nothing more to say... Or is there?

Does time exist???

DANDELION DAY

Winter won't last long

or are some of us dreaming

time doesn't exist

Hills as high as kites

higher ones to spring up soon

buildings that scrape skies

Figuring things out

rain won't wash away the pain

or clean greenhouse gas

and the wellingtons they chuck

at the great unwashed masses

Seasons come and go

summer seems like forever

dandelion day

They talk in whispers

about the awakening

like we're all asleep

but they've got what we've not got

they've got rakes shovels and spades

Heads up in the clouds

no one knows if they will fall

from their mountain high

Pick and mix the past

they shout it from the rooftops

of the mock-tail bar

shake up the unenlightened

no future like the present

Nothing inside us

can cleanse us now it's too late

everything is wrong

Time does it exist

or are some of us dreaming

winter won't last long

Madness...

Previously published in Poetry Now Anthology

Cowardy Custard's Last Stand (in Salford) Poetry pamphlet

and on my poetry archive bloggage at: www.mcfcuk.blogspot.com

I first wrote this little piece over thirty years ago, and finally it looks like someone has actually taken my advice. It was on the evening news that a church in Torbay is offering cycle repairs...

SALFORD
MADNESS
COMMUNITY
CHURCH

If I was the vicar
of this church
the first thing
I'd do is take
down the sign
that says:
No right of way
to public
No cycling
I'd invite the kids
down to spray
paint the walls
I'd stick up a
notice that said:
Public right of way
Cyclists welcome
punctures repaired
But perhaps there's
a method in their
madness after all.

24/Conclusion

GLOBAL/NAPOWRIMO 2024

CONCLUSION

First of all may I take this opportunity to congratulate everybody who completed, or even attempted, the thirty poems in thirty days challenge this year.

As ever, I feel as if I have failed to achieve very much this year, apart from the fact that I was able to complete the April challenge once again.

So, thank you for reading my posts and liking them, here and there, on FaceBook. Also, a very big thank you to the four thousand plus hits I got on my STG bloggage.

Of course it's never about the numbers, but it is nice to know that there are still a few people out there who do actually make/take the time to have a look at my work.

I would like to try and finish the month by writing another piece for my 'Hello Am I Even Home' collection, I had been thinking about the mechanics (for want of a better description) of writing this piece throughout April, but it just never happened.

HELLO AM I EVEN ESCAPING

Hardly holding onto the safety rail

I made my way down the old concrete steps

I slipped a little at the bottom but

recovering quickly I continued my escapade

Only looking around to see if either of my helpers

had noticed that I was missing yet

of course I had no intention of actually escaping

I simply wanted to find out if they would miss me

Starting to shiver a little I wished that

I had put a coat on over my pyjamas

one of my slippers was already soaking wet

and it dawned on me that I hadn't taken my pills

I was already in the city centre

the hustle and bustle and the smell of coffee

that daily greeted the early morning workers

where am I hello am I even escaping

Napo 24/1

Global/Napowrimo 2024

The April challenge of thirty poems in thirty days.

All my entries will be posted on my

Sweet Talking Guy bloggage at sewina.blogspot.com

Here's today's post:

NEVER MIND

Pews discarded like an ancient church hall

more Pastors than an Italian menu

They sing the hymns and bang the tins

like Oscar Wilde in Reading Gaol

Sadly there's no room left for Easter

It's religious to celebrate they say

sacrilegious as church on Sunday

scoffing they disregard Christmas too

Never mind the weather the beer is cool

Where do you come from? England I tell them

They pour Red Horse litre after litre

until it comes out of my ears

Christmas poem 2 and 3

TO THE KING OF KINGS

Wise men from the East Astrologers at least come to feast their eyes upon the King bringing gold frankincense and myrrh to the City of David at the centre of the earth where a virgin blessed by God has given birth to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords the Saviour for all sinners who believe for He proclaimed that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life for God did not send his Son into this world to condemn the world but to save the world through him Wise men from the east Astrologers at least come to feast their eyes upon the King bringing gold frankincense and myrrh to the City of David at the centre of the Earth where a virgin blessed by God has given birth to the King of Kings and Lord of Lords the Saviour for all sinners who believe

CHRISTMAS EVE

Can you believe

it's Christmas Eve today

Mush mush and

Such and such

Slush slush

Slush slush and

Such and such

Mush mush

I don't know much about

Reindeers and snow

but I suppose that they're

out there somewhere

It's Christmas Eve today

can you believe?

Christmas poem one

ON THE CYCLICAL SCALE

Compliments of the season to one and all

Maid Marion, Robin Hood (and his merry men)

They tell me that Christmas is for Kings

donkeys wise men shepherds and sheep

others say that Christmas is for puddings

turkeys with or without all the trimmings

One man said it's for feeding the homeless

another said you're either ruthless or roofless

these days, and no one really cares that much

how cynical is that on the cyclical scale

We won't be giving many presents this year

there'll be one or two and they'll cost a packet

you'll know it's yours if the carrier bag rattles

if it doesn't it'll be leftovers for the microwave

Maid Marion, Robin Hood (and his merry men)

compliments of the season to one and all

250 or Bust...

DREAM NINE

The ancient bus stutters to a halt, I get out and start to run up the hill. It’s raining hard and someone’s chasing me. I hate running and I hate rain, but most of all I hate hills. I can hear a man behind me, he’s shouting and he’s catching me fast. I reach the top of the hill and jump over an old stone wall, big mistake I realise, as I reach out and grab the overhead electric railway cable to break my fall. Just then I sense a train coming towards me, without thinking I let go of the cable and land on top of the speeding locomotive. I lie flat, clinging on for dear life, I’m soaking wet now and it’s still pouring with rain. After a few minutes the train pulls into a country station and I manage to clamber down onto the platform. I make my way outside, and board a waiting bus. The driver looks familiar, but I sit down near the back and hope the heater will help me get dry. The bus starts to move, but I have no idea where we are going. It creaks and groans as it begins to wind its way up a long wooded road. We overtake a cross country runner; I know I've seen him someplace before, but when and where? The bus is making a horrible gurgling noise now, and it all comes flooding back to me as the ancient bus stutters to a halt.

From 2018...

Something I wrote in 2018...

PURPLE HAZE

He beats and bangs her drums until she comes

And flaps his wings and flies around the room

His winkle-pickers tapping to the tune

He introduces her to rock 'n' roll

He strips and bares his soul and starts to sing

Some people do seem to have such strange ways

When she begins to weep his guitar plays

Some people say this world is just a maze

He tells her that there's nothing much to do

And we're all living in a purple haze

Friday like any other Friday but

It's Friday the thirteenth and that means that

Strange things happen even stranger things are

Forecast ask Hitchcock and Castro et al

Don't listen to the things that people say

And all the Different Ones born on that day

He beats and bangs her drums until she comes

Backflips and flaps his wings and flies away
